Necromancer Changes in Guild Wars 2?

Hmmm... only possible difference I can think of (other than utilities) would be the traits... I favored at least 20 into Soul Reaping, and regularly took major traits that complimented my DS use.

Although I primarily focused on PvE (wanted to run the AC dungeon a few times... btw, that was more fun than a box full of kittens) the necro is the only class I've done a fair amount of sPvP with and I didn't have too much difficulty with LF generation.

I tended towards builds which used DS quite often, but also took traits and skills to augment LF gen so that was possible. In PvE you've got kills happening all the time so LF gen is almost automatic, but in PvP there are fewer deaths happening around you so you've got to take that into account in your build decisions. IF you plan on making heavy use of DS then I consider it absolutely essential to include major traits like Vital Persistence and utilities like Spectral Armor with GW2 power leveling (use it constantly, not just when you're in trouble) and Blood is Power (which combines nicely with the heal I prefer in PvP Consume Conditions since the CD on that heal is quite fast.)

In the 2nd BWE (last weekend) I ended up using a 30/20/20 build with the 30 being in Soul Reaping and taking Vital Persistence, Soul Marks and Foot in the Grave as the major traits from that line... staff and axe/focus as the weapons. I've gotten quite comfortable with using ground targeted skills and routinely swap to staff for just a couple of seconds to lay out mutiple marks, and then quickly back to axe/focus for the bulk of time in combat and the majority of the damage I'm dealing while not in DS.

Utilities in this build were Spectral Armor (because duh... possibly the best skill necro has for PvP) Well of Darkness (absolutely essential imo for point defense... allows you to lay claim to any piece of dirt you want) and alternating between Blood is Power and Well of Suffering for the third utility (depending on the composition of my team, and the opposition... usually went with BiP)

Every mark generates LF, every hit I take while in SA gives LF gen, and BiP gives a big 20% pop whenever used (and also augments healing when really needed.)
Result... pretty much full LF most of the time and a LOT of damage when using DS with Guild Wars 2 power leveling...

Btw... I can't recommend the focus off-hand weapon highly enough with the axe when in PvP. You give up the increased mobility of the warhorn, but the ability to strip boons from opponents (the #5 focus skill Spinal Shivers) is ridiculously influential in so many fights, and is an absolute must in my own playstyle.

Engineer On Par in Guild Wars 2?

I did not PvP with the engi so I can't speak to that, however, I did play this profession for about 12 hours on Sunday in PvE in the same areas, and vs the same mobs that I've played through with necro, ele, warrior, guard, and thief (didn't like mesmer well enough to stick with them that long, and didn't like ranger enough to even try at all due to the pets)

The engi ranks in the top 3 for me personally... ahead of war and guard, and roughly equal with ele... the necro rates first due to it's incredible resiliency.

I experimented with rifle, pistol/pistol, and pistol/shield, and also with all turrets, and the med, grenade, mine, and flamethrower kits. My preferred weapons were the pistol/shield (greater range plus increased survivability) although I did also have some fun with the GW2 items also.

Bearing in mind that I have become quite comfortable with ground-targeted skills while playing necro and ele... I found the engi to be an extremely effective and fairly resilient profession and had no trouble soloing vs mobs 2-4 levels higher than my character.

It has an excellent combination of AoEs and "save your butt" style conditions, like the "blind" for making that next attack miss you, and in the case of the blind applied by the #3 pistol skill, if this is timed well it can be a very effective AoE blind and prevent multiple enemies from causing damage. (The #5 skill of the shield is also more fun than should be allowed by law AND is incredibly effective as well.)

I did not play the profession in the first BWE so I can't tell you how much has "changed" on it, but judging from about 17 levels of play through PvE areas, and comparing it's effectiveness to the other professions I've tested there, I can say that the speed and effectiveness of the engineer's kill rate was good, and their survivability in difficult situations (read that as 4 mobs of 3 levels higher than your character with limited or tough terrain) was on par with ele and guard and only surpassed by necro (and nothing comes close to beating necro for being tough to kill.)

I was a little bit frustrated with the number of utility skills that cannot be used underwater for this profession, but there were a couple of turrets that were usable (rifle and net) and those proved quite effective, plus the speargun skills are pretty decent. Imo the ele and guard are far and away the most powerful professions underwater, but I would say the engi holds it own inspite of the very small number of options for utility skills.

Having tried them out, they are definitely at least in my top 3 to create right away after the game launches, and with further experimentation at higher levels, the engi may even become my main... it's at least in the running for the class I play the most with certain regular groups in PvE.

Warriors

Dodging around the battlefield is an effective way to avoid a boss monster's damage, but now it's not the only way. Many of the warrior's new skills give you battlefield control by letting you tank in one place.

Cross Parry: Raise both swords to block an enemy's attacks. Works only in defensive stance, and lasts as long as the skill is engaged. Drains Resolve while active.

Smoke Flanker: Summons a creature made of smoke at your location, then moves you behind your enemy as the smoke flanker takes over your aggro.

Reaping Slash: A Spinning attack that deals extra damage when your Edge stack is more than three.

Lancers

The Lancer has always excelled at fighting whatever]s in front of  Tera power leveling, but now added ways for them to deal with attacks from the sides and rear and improved theri efficiency in soloplay.

Wallop: You jump forward and slam your shield against the ground, knocking down nearby enemies. Works even better after a Charging Lunge, SHield Barrage, Debilitate, Shield Counter, or Spring Attack.

Backstep: Leap backward to get away from an enemy perhaps in preparation for a charge!

Guild Wars 2 Getting Ready

Last week ArenaNet threw a quick little stress test for the Guild Wars 2 servers. It may, in fact, be the very last one. This is a pretty big milestone for the development team, as the game is set to launch in under a month. Yes, finally in less than a month Guild Wars 2 will hit the shelves, and players can begin to login in. The question is, "Is ArenaNet ready?"

A stress test is pretty simple. Players try to log into the game, and stress the servers to help a developer figure out how to make everyone's connection better. ArenaNet has used a few before, and there are some improvements to the game with each passing event. Even if you don't notice a performance improvement, you should have noticed an improvement in connectivity. The first BWE, and it was a lot of fun, but the game would disconnect every once in a while. It was the first public beta, so this actually wasn't too surprising. Then a stress test came and it removed a lot of "stress" from the next BWE. The process continued for a few months and each beta ran smoother than the last with GW2 items.

Last week's stress test really wasn't that much different. The main difference was I had a longer time getting into the game due to connectivity issues. I could login, and get to the character select screen. Once I hit play, the game just couldn't make the connection. After waiting a few minutes I tried again, and again. Yes I spammed trying to login, you never know when you'll get in. I know you all do it too! That soon cleared up after an hour, and it was almost smooth sailing from there. The neat thing was knowing that the game was being worked on as I was playing it, which may explain why I did get disconnected mid-game 2 or 3 times. Other players seemed to have the same experience, so it seems that the game is where it needs to be.

Is it the developers or the players who should be stress tested?

During this stress test I did notice the game running a bit smoother when multiple players appeared on my screen. Now it wasn’t bad before, but with multiple AOE effects going off at once, it would bring down your frame rate a bit. Each BWE actually showed improvement in this area as well, but it was never a huge improvement.

Now I know that the build for the beta was CPU bound, so our video cards really didn’t do much. During the BWE I would hit the auto detect button and get medium settings. I would go and adjust everything to the highest settings with guild wars 2 items, and my frame rate didn’t drop any more, it just stayed the same. The beta isn’t a real way to judge how well the game will ultimately run come launch, but I do feel confident that the game will not only stay connected, but run great based on the improvements I’ve seen.

ArenaNet has made a lot of improvements with their servers over the past couple of months. Are they really ready though? That’s hard to say. While we have seen a lot of improvements with the servers, Arenanet still has to guess how many players will be logging in during launch. It seems like a big guessing game, but ArenaNet has put a lot of time and effort trying to get things ready. Some of us may have tried playing a game earlier this year that didn’t work correctly on launch day. I won’t mention names. With the amount of rage that was unleashed upon the Internet, ArenaNet needs to make sure their game is ready and set to go with no hiccups to avoid that very situation.

The real purpose of a stress test in any game is really to have stress with cheap gw2 items now, so that there's no stress later. After all the previous stress tests, and seeing the improvement during each and every BWE, I feel confident that ArenaNet will have Guild Wars 2 ready for millions of players to enjoy. Time for Guild Wars 2 Class Building

1) What do you value in your favorite class archetypes and why?

The most enjoyable aspect of combat in any MMO, is to get in close and deal lots of damage. So for me damage is my primary goal for my main. That said, I do enjoy trying to build my own unique style into guild wars 2 items. I have never searched for or used FotM builds in any game I have played, and much prefer to create a build that suits my play style, that is effective and different from the norm. In Guild Wars 1 I would spend hours trying to find that slightly quirky build that I could call my own.

My secondary focus is that of survivability. Which, when building primarily for damage, is an elusive beast in most cases. I know full well that I will never be able to build against every situation AND have good damage output, but I did create some very effective builds in GW1 that allowed me to be good at both damage and survivability. But it took me years of getting to know the profession inside out and lots of practice to get the right combination of skills to achieve this. I am sure that I can achieve this in GW2, but I first need to choose the preferred profession before embarking on my building quest with guild wars 2 items.

For my main, I am only concerned with two things: Can they deal good damage? And can they deal that damage effectively in melee combat? (As that is my preferred range). After lots of theory crafting with build tools and play testing in the recent BWE and Stress Test I have finally decided on the Thief as my main profession. Now all I need to do is start the quest for that personalized build.

2) What is your approach when creating builds for a given class?

As my primary goal is damage, I first look for weapon skills that will output decent amounts of it. Then I look for utility and trait combinations that compliment my weapon skills. For the utility skills, I try to add in some very important control options, such as immobilize and/or chill, and some support skills such as weakness and/or vulnerability. For traits I try to build things more in favor of damage output and (in the case of the Thief) initiative management (the more ini, the more damage). On the survivability side, I have chosen a heal that removes movement controlling effects, so that I can escape if needed, and added a couple of traits to help keep me alive a little longer.

If I was to break down my build into percentages, it would be as follows: 50% damage, 35% control and support and 15% survival. In a lot of MMO's, having a small survival percentage may not be very effective, but as GW2's combat is strongly governed by player skill, I can afford to put less attention into this area than I would normally in other games with guild wars 2 items.

A note on flexibility.
I'd just like to finish by saying that, although my main will be built primarily for damage, I do understand and enjoy the role flexibility plays. I also try to choose a profession that can build with flexibility in mind if needed. The nice thing about GW2 items is, that all professions are able to build this way. So if you want a Thief build that is flexible or a Guardian build that deals a lot of damage, then you have that option available to you. As well as creating my own ultimate damage build, I will also have a lot of fun creating highly flexible and support oriented Thief builds. Also, the Thief will not be my only character. I intend to create a character for each profession and create many interesting and unique builds for each.

I know, I have my work with guild wars 2 items cut out for me. But it's all good fun and it's part of the game for me :). Happy building everyone.
